IIT Madras lecturer half-burnt body found on campus

The body of a lecturer has been found dead near a hockey field at the IIT-Madras campus on Thursday.

On Thursday night, Chennai police recovered the charred body of a young man who was working as a guest lecturer and project coordinator of IIT-Madras from a hockey stadium located on the campus.

The victim has been identified as Unni Krishnan Nair, native of Kerala, whose father works with ISRO. He returned to the campus on Thursday morning from Kerala and was found dead at the stadium in the campus around 7pm by some students.

The body has been retrieved by Kotturpuram police and sent to Government Royapettah Hospital for autopsy.

According to police, 'The skin of the victim's face and some other parts were partially burnt. No suspicious material was found near the body.'

IIT-Madras has issued a statement over the scholar's death saying, "An unfortunate and tragic incident occurred (Thursday) yesterday at IIT Madras Campus, involving a temporary project staff. The project staff whose body was found had joined the Institute in April 2021 and was living outside the Campus."

"We are shocked and deeply grieved, and convey our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the departed soul. The police are investigating the incident and the Institute is fully cooperating with the authorities," the institute further said.
