16 dead due to heavy rainfall and floods

Dehradun: Heavy rains in Uttarakhand have caused chaos and tragedy for the third day in a row, with flooded roads and buildings, wrecked bridges, and overflowing water bodies stranding villagers and visitors in remote and perilous regions.

Sixteen persons have been confirmed dead, including Nepalese laborers who were trapped alive under rubble and residents of Champawat district, where a house collapsed due to a landslide. Authorities are concerned about the safety of others who may be trapped beneath the debris as a result of the fatalities.

"The scenario has been communicated to Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Shah. Houses, bridges, and other structures have been damaged, and 16 people have perished as a result. Three (Army) helicopters would be deployed for search and rescue missions "The news agency ANI reported Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.

The Nainital lake has overflowed, a bridge over the Chalthi river that was under construction has been washed away due to rising water levels, and a car with passengers inside has become stuck between two boulders in the midst of a swollen stream.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red signal for Uttarakhand, predicting heavy to extremely heavy rain on Monday.

The weather service has forecast a "substantial reduction in rainfall activity over Uttarakhand from today," with "isolated to scattered" showers. This will provide some relief in the coming days.
