Wetlands aids to maintain and enhance biodiversity and ecological health of the earth. Every year, World Wetlands Day is observed on February 2, since 1997. The day is observed to raise an awareness about the importance of wetlands.
History of the Day
In the year 1971, on February 2, World Wetlands Day was adopted as an international treaty called Convention on Wetlands in Ramsar, Iran. This year, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) gave an official recognition to celebrate the day on February 2 as it adopted Resolution 75/317 as World Wetlands Day on August 30, last year.
Significance of the Day
Wetlands are very important and sensitive ecosystems that help a wide variety of plants and animals to survive in their ecosystem. Due to the creation of landfills and real estate projects these wetlands get destroyed.
Theme of the Day for 2022
For 2022, the theme of the year is "Wetlands Action for People and Nature". The theme is an appeal to all aspects of society to save the wetlands from disappearing and to restore the degraded ones.
