Public and private sector banks will remain closed today, April 4 on account of Mahavir Jayanti in some states, as per the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) bank official holiday calendar. 

Mahavir Jayanti marks the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir and is celebrated across the country and is the most important festival of Jains. Notably, bank holidays differ depending on the state.

Banks will be closed today, April 4 in Ahmedabad, Aizawl, Belapur, Bangaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Raipur, and Ranchi.

Mahavir Jayanti holds an immense importance among Jain community people. They celebrate this day to mark the birth anniversary of the great Tirthankara of Jainism. He was born on the 13th day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Chaitra.
