Every year January 15 is celebrated as Army Day as it was the day in 1949 when Field Marshal Sir Kodandera "Keeper" Marshal Kariappa took over the Indian Army from British General Sir Francis Butcher. Field Marshal Kariyappa, the first officer of the Indian Army to hold five star ranks, also led his forces in World War II and the First Indo-Pak War of 1947.
He was known for his bravery and ability to lead the army. He said, "I am an Indian and will remain an Indian till my last breath."
Let us tell you that the main reason for celebrating Army Day on this day is that Field Marshal KM Kariappa took over as Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army on 15 January 1949 from the last British Commander-in-Chief of India.
Who was Field Marshal Kariappa?
Born on January 28, 1898, Field Marshal Sir KM Kariappa was the first Commander-in-Chief of the Independent India Army. Known for his bravery, Field Marshal Kariyappa joined the Indian Army soon after the First World War and fought in the Second World War and the Indo-Pak War of 1947. He is one of the two Indian Army officers who have been awarded the Five Star rank of Field Marshal. Sam Manekshaw was the second Indian Army officer to hold the rank of Field Marshal.
How is Army Day celebrated?
The Indian Army organizes Army Day by organizing a military parade at its headquarters in New Delhi. In the parade held at the national capital's Kariyappa Parade Ground, army personnel perform stunts and demonstrate their valor and strength. On this day, gallantry awards and army medals are also awarded to army soldiers and jawans.
