- Now press and hold the widget and drop it on any of your home screens. Now that you have added the widget to your home screen, simply long-press on the widget to expand it. 

With this method, you will also be able to read all old unread messages as well. However, if you click on any of the chats on the widget, the chat in the application will open, by which the sender will know that you have read their message/s.
