Vaishno Devi Stampede: 12 people dies, 13 injured, PM expresses grief

At least 12 people were killed and 13 injured in a stampede that broke out at the famous Mata Vaishno Devi temple in Jammu and Kashmir.

A stampede has occurred among the devotees who came to visit Mata Vaishno Devi temple on the New Year's Eve. At least 12 people were killed and 13 injured in a stampede that broke out at the famous Mata Vaishno Devi temple in Jammu and Kashmir. As per news agency ANI, Block Medical Officer of Community Health Center Gopal Dutt said that 12 people died in a stampede at Mata Vaishno Devi temple in Katra. Those who died include people from Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir. The injured are being rescued and admitted to Narayana Hospital. 

Officials said that the stampede took place near gate number 3 outside the sanctum sanctorum of the temple located on Trikuta hills. On the occasion of the beginning of the new year, a stampede broke out due to the huge crowd of devotees who came to pay homage, said the officials. 

PM Modi expressed grief 

After the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief on Twitter. He wrote- Extremely saddened by the loss of lives due to a stampede at Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan. Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon. Spoke to JK LG Shri @manojsinha_ Ji, Ministers Shri @DrJitendraSingh Ji, @nityanandraibjp Ji and took stock of the situation."
