Indian Railways To Charge Extra for Passenger's Luggage

As per a recent update, Indian Railways announced to levy extra charges on passengers' luggage on the basis of weight. In the announcement, the Railways clearly mentioned that the new rules will be followed strictly. 

The Indian Railways shared the recent update through their official Twitter handle. The tweet reads, "If the luggage is more then the enjoyment of the journey will be half! Do not travel by train carrying more luggage. In case of excess baggage, go to the parcel office and book the luggage."

The Fresh Guidelines 

According to the fresh guidelines, for traveling in sleeper class a passenger would be allowed to carry maximum luggage of up to 40 kg with no extra charges. Similarly, a passenger traveling in second class will be allowed to carry maximum luggage of up to 35 kg. While traveling in AC First Class, the passenger will be allowed to carry maximum luggage of up to 70 kg.

Penalty on carrying extra luggage 

If any passenger wants to carry extra luggage then they can pay extra charges for their luggage. It is like a similar system that is followed by the airlines. As per the reports, if any passenger is found with extra luggage than the allowed capacity, that passenger will have to bear a fine equivalent to six times the baggage rate. 

To book the luggage, passengers need to take their luggage to the luggage office 30 minutes prior to the departure time of the train. Luggage can also be booked while booking the tickets. 

In a notification, the Railways said, "Luggage which is not securely packed will not be accepted for booking and carriage unless the sender or his authorized agent executes a forwarding note and record therein such defects or improper packing."
