Tokyo Paralympics: Manoj Sarkar wins Bronze in Men's Singles Badminton

Manoj Sarkar has won Bronze medal in Men's Singles Badminton event at Tokyo Paralympics.

On Saturday, the 11th day of the Tokyo Paralympics, Manoj Sarkar has won bronze medal in the men’s singles badminton (SL3) event. Sarkar defeated Japan's Daisuke Fujihara by scoring 22-20, 21-13 in the bronze medal match at the Yoyogi National Stadium in a contest which lasted for 47 minutes.

With an addition of his bronze, India’s medal tally has now reached to 17 including four gold medals, seven silver and six bronze medals so far in Tokyo. This year's performance is the country’s best ever at a Paralympic event. 

Manoj is a 31-year-old badminton player. His right leg was affected by polio when he was one year old. Sarkar started playing badminton at age five as a passion to win against his elder brothers. Later, he played inter-school competition against able-bodied players till the 11th grade and then he started to compete in para-badminton in 2011. 

At the 2016 Asian Championships in Beijing, he won a gold medal in the SL3 singles. In 2018, he was felicitated with the Arjuna Award and a year later, at the Sportstar Aces Awards, he was named as Para Sportsman of the Year.
