On Thursday, Olympic bronze medal winner Indian hockey star Birendra Lakra has announced to quit the game with immediate effect. The announcement came hours after his teammate Rupinder Pal Singh has announced retirement. Lakra’s retirement was announced by Hockey India on its official twitter handle.

The 31-year-old Lakra played as a defender and he was the part of India’s bronze medal-winning side in the recently held Tokyo Olympics. He was also a part of the 2014 gold medal-winning Incheon Asian Games team and the side that claimed bronze in 2018 Jakarta.
Lakra’s teammate drag-flicker Rupinder, who has played a starring role in the historic bronze-winning Tokyo Olympics campaign has announced his surprise international retirement "to make way for youngsters".
