In the final of the 2023 World Test Championship at the Oval, Australia emerged victorious over India by a margin of 209 runs. The day started with India still in the game, but their chances quickly diminished as Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane were dismissed early on.
Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur couldn't provide much resistance as they both were out for ducks. Nathan Lyon was the standout bowler, taking four wickets, while Scott Boland provided excellent support by capturing three wickets, including those of Kohli and Jadeja.
On the fifth and final day, India's hopes rested on a focused Kohli as they required another 280 runs to make history and win the World Test Championship. However, their pursuit of the target got off to a shaky start as Shubman Gill (18 off 19) fell to a controversial catch. Captain Rohit Sharma (43 off 60) and Cheteshwar Pujara (27 off 47) also contributed to their own downfall, leaving India at 93 for three in the 31st over.
Australia had declared their second innings at 270 for 8 during the afternoon session, with Alex Carey remaining unbeaten on 66. In their chase, Indian openers Rohit and Gill started aggressively, taking on the formidable bowling duo of Pat Cummins and Scott Boland.
However, just before tea, Boland produced a delivery that bounced a little extra from a good length, resulting in Gill edging it to a diving Cameron Green at gully. It was Green's second impressive catch of the match, although replays suggested it was a close call with the ball possibly touching the ground.
Rohit accumulated most of his runs through pull shots, and the enthusiastic Indian crowd cheered him on when he hit Starc's second ball of the innings for a six over fine-leg. Lyon was introduced into the attack in the 20th over to break the partnership between Rohit and Pujara, and he succeeded in doing so. Bowling from around the wicket, Lyon delivered a full ball around Rohit's pads, tempting him to sweep, but Rohit missed it. Rohit unsuccessfully reviewed the leg before wicket decision.
