World Soil Day: Know the History, Significance and Theme

Every year, World Soil Day is celebrated on December 5 to draw people’s attention towards the importance of sustainable management of soil. The day is observed to raise awareness about soil degradation. Soil degradation has emerged as a serious environmental problem in the recent times as it is caused due to the decline in soil condition. The condition of the soil is degraded due to industrialization and poor management of agricultural land. 

History of the day 

In 2022, the international observance was recommended by the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) to aware people about the degrading condition of the soil, its impact and its prevention. The Food and Agriculture Organization had supported the day to be celebrated as a global awareness-raising platform under the leadership of the Kingdom of Thailand and within the framework of the Global Soil Partnership. 

Significance of the day 

Soil degradation processes are usually caused due to soil salinization and sodification. The day goals to spread awareness about the need of a healthy ecosystems. 

Theme of the day 

For 2021, the theme of World Soil Day is ‘Halt soil salinization, boost soil productivity’ with a purpose to create awareness about the importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems and human well-being.
