World Post Day is celebrated on October 9 every year to mark the anniversary of worldwide establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU). In 1874, the UPU was established in the capital of Switzerland, Bern.
History of the day
In 1969, the UPU Congress held in Tokyo, Japan, declared October 9 to be celebrated as the World Post Day. In the inception of this day, India has a significant role to play. An Indian delegate named Anand Mohan Narula has submitted the inception of this day. After the International Telecommunication Union, the UPU is the second oldest worldwide International organization. On July 1, 1948, it became a specialized United Nations agency.
Significance of the day
In the week-long annual celebration, India participates over the week of October 9. In India, the day is celebrated by organizing special stamp exhibitions and launching new products and services in the postal services.
Theme of the day
For 2021, the theme is "Innovate to recover". This year's theme acknowledges the role played by Postal services in connecting people during lockdown period happened due to the Covid-19 breakout.
In a statement, the UPU Director General said, "It is this innovativeness of Posts, and their resilience in serving communities, that we are celebrating on the occasion of World Post Day."
