Every year, World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5 with an aim to highlight the importance of our planet and why do we need to safeguard it from potential threats. The natural surroundings of our planet Earth consist of plants, trees, animals, birds, and human beings, across the land, water bodies, and the sky.

However, due to widely spreading pollution, the environment of the planet is getting damaged. Global warming, air pollution, land pollution, water pollution, and a loss of biodiversity are also leading causes of the degradation of our planet.

History of the Day

In 1972, the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment conducted in Stockholm originated the concept of World Environment Day. This conference started on June 5 and continued in effect till June 16.

As per the official website of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), World Environment Day was first celebrated on June 5, 1973. The day is celebrated in different countries on a rotational basis since 1987. In 2022, the celebrations of the day will be taking place in Sweden to mark the 50th anniversary of the UN conference in 1972.

Significance of the Day

Due to the emissions of greenhouse gases the global temperatures of the planet are rising at an alarming rate. Apart from this, extreme weather conditions are also occurring making the survival of human lives difficult and also leading to drastic devastation of our flora and fauna. Moreover, pollution emitted from factories, plastic wastes, and deforestation are the leading causes for the extinction of various species of our flora and fauna on land and sea.

The observance of World Environment Day highlights the need to take the required precautions for saving our planet. In order to spread the message to a larger audience, the day is celebrated by the United Nations in a collaborative manner with various civil societies, governments, schools, institutions, celebrities, and many more.
