The World Day of War Orphans is observed on January 6 every year. The day has gained more relevance in the times of Covid-19 pandemic. The World Day of War Orphans is observed to raise an awareness among people about the children in awful conditions, particularly during pandemic. Children who have got injured in a gunfight or got separated from their families needs special care to heal from the mental wounds and restart normal life.

History of the Day 

The French organization SOS Enfants en Detresses founded the World Day of War Orphans to address the plight of war orphans. 

Significance of the Day 

As per UNICEF estimates, "the number of orphans in affluent nations is quite low. However, the numbers are much higher in the areas affected by wars and major diseases. According to the estimate, millions of orphans were left in Europe after World War II, including more than 300,000 in Poland and 200,000 in Yugoslavia alone.

The purpose of observing World Day of War Orphans is to commemorate war orphans and to make people aware of their obligation to support youngsters in crisis-affected places.
