The bicycle is one of the oldest forms of transport which also keeps people active and energetic. This mode of transport is still used globally by many people. Cycling offers numerous health benefits to everyone regardless of age, gender, etc. It is a form of exercise which develops strength and improves the metabolism of our body. June 3 is celebrated annually as World Bicycle Day with an aim to raise awareness among people about the health benefits offered by cycling. 

History of the Day 

On June 3, 2018, the United Nations adopted a resolution during the 72nd regular session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York in April. More than 193 member nations adopted this declaration which encouraged them to include bicycles in regional, international, and subnational development programs and policies. In the assembly, the versatility of the bicycle was acknowledged as it has served as a sustainable transportation medium for two centuries.

Significance of the Day
