Every year, World Arthritis Day (WAD) is celebrated on October 12 to raise an awareness about the existence and impact of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases. Arthritis is a broad term for more than a hundred diseases related to joints. It can create swelling in or around a joint, resulting in pain, stiffness, and sometimes difficulty moving.

History of the day

In 1196, World Arthritis Day was first observed. The day offers an opportunity for all communities, everywhere, to join hands together and find a common voice to help spread the much-needed message to all audiences.

Theme of the day

For 2021, the theme of the day is "Don’t Delay, Connect Today: Time2Work".

Significance of the day

Campaigns are launched and awareness is created on the timely diagnosis of Arthritis and its management strategies.

As per an estimate, "there are one-hundred million people who are undiagnosed and trying to cope with symptoms that are often overlooked and frequently misdiagnosed", according to EULAR (European Alliance of Associations For Rheumatology).
