Winter is one of the loved seasons leaving behind hot summers, though some enjoy these months and some don’t but, one thing that’s common is feeling cold. The part that faces the change in temperature initially is the ‘skin’, when there is fall in degrees the ‘thermo-receptors nerve’ present below the skin sends signals to the hypothalamus to detect whether you are feeling cold or not. The intensity of the feeling can be mild or strong and affects at different levels. As soon as the body receives the signal the inside of your body starts to balance the temperature with the surrounding and the hair on your body also helps in protecting against the cold.
The brain is aware that your body cannot sustain cold and if temperature falls rapidly then organs can fail or can be fatal as well. This condition is called hypothermia. Though you may not be feeling cold on the surface but the brain sends message to the body to decrease its work intensity in order to generate metabolism heat to keep the body warm therefore when you are shivering you ought to believe that the body has slowed down its functions and the process can be of different time lengths depending on the outside temperature.
During this process of keeping warm the blood vessels constrict themselves to slowdown the blood and heat to reach to the colder skin.
After the body is done with self heating itself you might feel cold from outside but the insides are protected.
When the surrounding and your body temperature become almost same you quit shivering from cold.
Every human being is different hence The intensity at which ones body reacts to low temperatures also depend on gender, food and lifestyle, genes, age etc. some might shiver severely in winters and some might not as every body type is different and reacts accordingly.
