Also known as National Youth Day, Swami Vivekananda's birthday is celebrated on January 12 every year. Swami Vivekananda was a spiritual leader, philosopher and social reformist from the 18th century. He was born on January 12, 1863 at Kolkata to an aristocratic Bengali family. 2022 marks his 159th birth anniversary.
History of the Day
It was in 1985 that the Government of India declared Swami Vivekananda’s birthday to be celebrated as National Youth Day to honour the great philosopher and monk. Swami Vivekananda has a bent towards spirituality since childhood. He used to practice meditation and joined Brahmo Samaj movement as well for a certain time period.
Significance of the Day
The teachings of Swami Vivekananda has inspired a lot of young Indians. His teachings have brought a spiritual awakening in the 19th century, and this is one of the reason that his birth anniversary is also celebrated as National Youth Day. Being one of India’s leading thinkers he rediscovered Indian philosophy through ancient Hindu scriptures, under the mentorship of mystic and yogi Ramakrishna Paramahansa.
