Every year, January 21 is observed as the National Hugging Day in the USA and UK. A hug is a beautiful and thoughtful expression of love and support.

History of the Day

In 1986, National Hugging Day was first celebrated in Clio, Michigan, USA. The idea was coined by Kevin Zaborney. During the holidays, he observed that people sound a little low in spirit, especially after Christmas, New Year and Valentine’s Day. So, in order to ensure people to stay in high spirits and not depressed or lonely, he gave the idea to introduce a day like Hugging Day.

Significance of the Day

The significance of National Hugging Day is to encourage people to be more compassionate and demonstrative about their emotions. As the times are changing, people feel lonely and isolated. A gesture of hugging helps people to establish connections with each other. Hug shows support and empathy. The day is aimed to change an outlook towards emotions. As believed by researchers, hugging aids in stress reduction, better heart health and improved immunity. Hugging also generates oxytocin in the brain which is responsible for happiness.
