History of the Day
Around the 1700s dentistry was recognized as a full time profession. However, Hippocrates and Aristotle had earlier written about dentistry to emphasize the treatment of tooth decay.
In 1530, a book titled ‘The Little Medicinal Book for All Kinds of Diseases and Infirmities of the Teeth’ on dentistry was published.
In 1724, Pierre Fauchard, a French surgeon was declared as the Father of Modern Dentistry.
In 1840, the first dental college called Baltimore College of Dental Surgery was founded. In India, Dr. Rafiuddin Ahmed is known as the Father of Modern Dentistry. He was born on 24 December, 1890 in Bardhanpara, East Bengal, India.
In India, the Indian Dental Association (IDA) works as an independent and dedicated body to represent dental professionals. IDA represents more than 75,000 dental professionals, has 33 state branches and 450 local branches. So, in order to honor the efforts of experts in the knowledge of dental care to help us with their specialty National Dentist’s Day is observed. Dental Care includes all the professionals like dental surgeons, orthodontists, periodontists, pediatric dentists, prosthodontists, dental assistants, dental technicians, dental therapists.
Significance of the Day
The day holds significance to encourage people for having proper oral health, having good dental habits, and staying loyal to dental care. The aim of the day is to create awareness so that people get to know about the importance of regular dental check-ups. A dentist should be visited regularly to ensure good health of our teeth and gums.
National Dentist's Day is an attempt to appreciate the efforts of the dentists and dental specialists who keep our mouths healthy, including general dentists, pediatric dentists, orthodontists, oral surgeons and prosthodontists.
