Every year, International Day of Women and Girls in Science is observed by the United Nations (UN) on 11 February. The aim of this day is to promote the participation of women in subjects such as science, engineering, technology and mathematics (STEM). It also aims to raise awareness about the contribution of women and girls in the field of technology and science. This year marks the seventh year of the International Day of Women and Young Girls in Science.
History and Significance of the Day
A significant gender gap exists to this day in STEM fields. The Commission on the Status of Women adopted a report at its 55th session in 2011, which called for equal access to decent work and full employment, and "the participation of women and young girls in education, training and science and technology".
In 2013, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution recognizing that girls' participation in STEM research and innovation is critical to achieving gender equality. In the year 2015, UNGA declared the day on 11 February as the International Day of Women and Young Girls in Science. The day is implemented by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and UN-Women in coordination with civil society institutions.
