On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has paid tributes to noted freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai on his birth anniversary. Also known as the 'Punjab Kesari', Rai was born in 1865 in Dhudike village of Punjab. Rai was one of the most prominent leaders of India's freedom struggle.

The Punjab Kesari

He fought against the British rule and was given the title of 'Punjab Kesari' or 'Lion of Punjab' due to his nationalism and enthusiastic ideologies. Rai is remembered as Lal from the 'Lal-Bal-Pal' trio (Lala Lajpat Rai, Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Bipin Chandra Pal) and was a prominent leader of the Congress party.

The Freedom Struggle

In 1894, Lala Lajpat Rai also established Punjab National Bank (PNB) and Lakshmi Insurance Company. In the year 1928, when the Simon Commission was established by the British in India to control the political situation in the country, Indians opposed the commission. Lala Lajpat Rai led a non-violent march to protest and boycott the British Simon Commission, but was unfortunately attacked and injured by a police lathi charge against the protesters.

Rai was seriously injured and eventually died of a heart attack on November 17, 1928. On the occasion of 157th birth anniversary of Lala Lajpat Rai, we remember the contribution made by him through some inspirational quotes and slogans of the revolutionary freedom fighter who sacrificed his life for the country.
