The 11 day long festival of Ganeshotsav has started on September 10 and will continue till September 21. During this festival, people, particularly in Maharashtra, celebrate the Gauri Puja, a three-day long festival. Every year, this festival is observed on the fourth- or fifth-day, following Ganesh Chaturthi. This year the festival will start from September 13.
Jyeshtha Gauri Avahana and Mangala Gauri Vrat are also known as the Gauri Puja. As per the Hindu calendar, the puja is performed by devotees of Gauri and Mahalakshmi at the time when Anuradha Nakshatra begins during the Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month. As per Hindu mythology, it is believed that Goddess Sita observed Gauri Puja to get Lord Ram as her husband.
Puja Vidhi
Women devotees observe fast and pray for the well-being of their husbands. The welcome, or Avahana, is celebrated as a separate event. Women bring in the idol of the Goddess, and her footsteps are imprinted as she enters the home. The women of the house performs puja and wear jewellery and a new saree. Unmarried females pray to Devi Parvati to get a suitable life partner. It is believed that Devi Parvati bless all her worshippers’ desires.
Significance
As per Hindu Mythology, it is believed that Goddess Gauri is an avatar of Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha’s mother. According to the legends, Goddess Gauri visits worshippers’ homes to find Lord Ganesha, who is staying at his devotees’ home during Ganeshotsav. Goddess Gauri brings wealth into the devotees' homes of those she visits. Twin Gauri and Ganesha idols are worshipped on this day. It strengthens the relation and bond between husband and wife, and removes obstacles in marriage. It also results in the selection of a desired and compatible life partner.
