Every year, International Women’s Day is observed on March 8 across the globe. The day honors the achievements of women and their existence. Across the globe, International Women’s Day is celebrated as a public holiday. 

History and Significance of the Day 

On February 28, 1909, the Socialist Party of America organized first National Women’s Day in New York. Labour activist Theresa Malkiel has suggested the celebration of the day. She has commemorated protests against garment workers in the city. In 1910, inspired from the American socialists, German delegates proposed the idea of women’s day. 

The United Nations began commending women’s day in 1975 and in 1977, the UN General Assembly announced March 8 as International Women’s Day for women’s rights and world harmony. The UN has been commending this day from that point, setting up a theme consistently. 

This day holds importance on the grounds that the the world commends women’s accomplishments on this day, creates awareness regarding women’s equality and talks about gender equality. 

Theme of the Day 

For 2022, the theme for International Women’s Day 2022 is ‘Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow’. The United Nations anticipates features to highlight the contribution of women and girls across the globe who are electing to promote their networks or working on environment change variation, working in building a more practical future for everybody. Individuals and several organizations set up different events for women across the world, for them to come and explore the world.
