International Men's Day is celebrated every year on November 19. The day is observed to celebrate the achievements and contributions of men towards the nation, society, community, family, marriage, and childcare.
International Men's Day was instituted in 1992 on February 7 by Thomas Oaster. In 1999, the event was revived by Jerome Teelucksing. He chose November 19 to acknowledge his father's birthday and to celebrate how Trinidad and Tobago's football team had unified the country in their efforts to be qualified for the World Cup.
In India, the inaugural celebration of the day was organized by the leading Indian Men's rights organisation named Indian Family on 19 November 2007.
Know this years theme of Men's day:
The six main goals of International Men's Day are to promote positive male role models, to celebrate men's positive contributions to society, to focus on men's health and well-being, to highlight discrimination against men, to promote gender equality, to improve gender relations and to create a safer and better world. But apart from these Six core pillars that are celebrated on this day, a secondary theme is also taken in consideration and celebrated that particular day. For example in 2016 it was “Stop Male suicide”, in 2019 it was “Celebrating Men And Boys In All Their Diversity”.
This year with the Corona pandemic making all our lives gloomy and glum, the secondary theme is “Better health for Men and Boys”, keeping in mind the health conditions of men in our lives and how to better them. The theme for 2020 also emphasizes on removing the stigma around men’s mental health and spreading awareness on maintaining better health for men around the world.
So this year, let’s take a moment and talk to the men in our lives, make them realize they don’t always have to ‘Man’ up, it is OK to talk about one’s feelings, after-all they are also hu’man’s and when it comes to mental health it does not take gender in consideration.
