Forests

The International Day of Forests is celebrated annually on March 21. The main purpose behind the celebration of this day is to raise public awareness about the values, significance, and contributions of the forests to balance the ecosystem of the earth. In order to make people aware about the importance of forests and trees and vegetations which exists outside the forests various organizations, private and government, work together. The day focusses to develop awareness about the importance of the green cover for not only today but also for all future generations.

History of the Day

In 1971, the sixteenth meeting of the Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) decided in favor of “World Forestry Day". Later, in between 2007 to 2012, the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) conducted six Forest Days. In 2011, CIFOR proclaimed the year as the Year of Forests while working in partnership with Collaborative Partnership on Forest (an arm of the United Nations Forum of Forests).

On November 28, 2012, The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed that March 21 to be celebrated as International Day of Forests (IDF).

Theme of the Day

The theme of the day for every year is decided by the Collaborative Partnership on Forests. For 2022, the theme is “Forests and sustainable production and consumption”.

Importance of the Day

The International Day of Forests focusses towards encouraging the countries to “undertake local, national and international efforts to organize activities involving forests and trees, such as tree planting campaigns.” By promoting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a sustained survival of forests ensures that our economy, ecosystem and species also keep surviving.
