According to the texts of Hindu mythology, father of goddess Parvati had decided to marry her off to Lord Vishnu. Goddess Parvati did not want to marry Lord Visnu as she wanted to marry Lord Shiva.
On the wedding day, Parvati's friend had taken her to a dense forest in order to save her from marrying Lord Vishnu. In the jungle she spent years in praying to Lord Shiva. Eventually, to answer to her dedicated prayers ‘Bholenath’ appeared in front of her. He also accepted the Parvati's will of marrying him. It is believed that Lord Shiva had accepted the will of Goddess on the day of Hartalika Teej.
