Govardhan Puja is celebrated on the next day of Diwali i.e. Kartik Shukla Pratipada. On this day, animals are worshiped along with the Govardhan mountain.
Significance of Govardhan Puja
As per a narration in Vishnu Purana, it is believed that Lord Krishna, along with the people of Braj, worshipped Mount Govardhan on this auspicious day and prayed to Lord Indra to protect the village of Braj from incessant rains. There was a time when the people of Braj used to worship Lord Indra, the god of rain, for a good harvest before the start of their harvest season. But the grand scale and splendor associated with the worship did not please Krishna. Therefore, he proceeded to persuade the people of Braj to stop worshiping Indra and offer prayers to Mount Govardhan, which according to him was the reason behind the prosperity of the region.
This enraged Indra and caused heavy rain in the small village. Krishna gathered the people of Braj to offer prayers to Mount Govardhan. He requested Lord Govardhan to allow him to lift it on his little finger so that people and cattle could take shelter under it. Govardhan Parvat fulfilled his wish and Lord Krishna lifted him on his finger. Thus he also came to be known as Giridhari or Govardhandhari. When Lord Indra came to know about his mistake he immediately apologized to Lord Krishna and stopped the rain. Since then Govardhan Puja has become an important part of the Gujarati New Year celebrations.
