Masoor dal is a widely consumed staple in Indian households, and masoor dal khichdi is a beloved dish for many. This easy and delicious recipe can be enjoyed with roti or rice. Here's a recipe for masoor dal khichdi:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup masoor dal (red lentils)
- 1 cup rice
- 4 cups water
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1 tomato, finely chopped
- 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp turmeric powder (haldi)
- 1 tsp garam masala
- Salt and sugar to taste
- 2 tbsp ghee (clarified butter)
Fresh coriander leaves for garnishing
Procedure:
- Thoroughly rinse the masoor dal and rice separately under running water until the water runs clear.
- Soak the dal and rice in water for around 30 minutes.
- Heat ghee in a pressure cooker and add cumin seeds. Cook until they turn brown.
- Add the chopped onions and fry until golden brown.
- Next, add the ginger-garlic paste and cook for about a minute.
- Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they become soft.
- Drain the water from the soaked dal and rice, and add them to the cooker.
- Add turmeric powder, garam masala, salt, and sugar. Mix well. Then, add 4 cups of water and combine everything.
- Cover the pressure cooker with a lid and allow it to cook on high heat for two whistles. Then, reduce the heat and cook for another 10 minutes.
- Once cooked, stir the khichdi well and garnish with fresh coriander leaves. Serve it hot and enjoy.
