Are you wondering why you saw a scary dream instead of a fascinating one? Are terrific dreams ruining your sleep and morning mood? If yes, then you must have seen a nightmare. 

Although the term "nightmare" were used for a condition where a person during their sleep feels an immense weight pressing down on him. Dr Satish Kumar CR, Consultant, Clinical Psychology, Manipal Hospital, Bangalore described nightmares as “The content of the dream is very traumatic or scary, mostly threatening life”. He also mentioned that such dreams  can cause shivering, sweating and a racing heart. Even if a person forgets the exact content of the dream, but he continues to be haunted by it throughout the day.

If you want to avoid such scary dreams you must understand the reason behind their occurance. Dr. Kumar said "people going through long-term stressors like family members going through terminal illness, past traumatic incidences or grief are more likely to experience them,”.Aishwarya Raj, a clinical psychologist "Sleep disorders and medications can also cause nightmares. People who suffer from anxiety, depression, PTSD, and other mental health disorders may be more susceptible to nightmares. Additionally, children and adolescents are more likely to experience nightmares than adults,”. 

Nightmares can cause sleep deprivation. “People who have continuous nightmares can develop anxiety, depression or maybe engage in alcohol consumption to cope with the nightmares. If the nightmares are accompanied by other symptoms such as flashbacks, panic attacks, or suicidal thoughts, it is important to seek professional help" said Dr. Kumar.

Dr. Raj listed some ways to cop with nightmares, “such as practising relaxation techniques before bed, creating a calming bedtime routine, avoiding stimulating activities before sleep, and talking to a therapist or mental health professional”. In case of severe and persistent nightmares one may require medications and other treatments by experts.
