Beginning of this week witnessed the news that hackers have allegedly stolen the personal data of around 500 million active users from WhatsApp. The theft is considered to occur in around 84 countries of the world. Cybernews was the first who claimed that the hackers are planning to sell these stolen private data. 

Meanwhile, WhatsApp’s claim of end-to-end encryption that keeps private exchanges safe from a privacy breach is being questioned by the netizens who are deeply disappointed about the leakage. WhatsApp spokesperson tried to justify that the accusations are completely false and said: “The claim written on Cybernews is based on unsubstantiated screenshots. There is no evidence of a ‘data leak’ from WhatsApp.”

As per reports data has been stolen from countries such as Saudi Arabia, France, Italy, Egypt, and Turkey. The fact that India’s name in the list could not barricade Twitter users of India from reacting and debating on the WhatsApp’s of data theft. The Twitter got laden with memes and jokes about the cross-platform messaging app.

Many people considered the seriousness of their privacy violation and showed their concern about the possibility of financial fraud and identity theft. On the other hand a number of people made it an object of laughter and claimed that they will not be affected by it. 

A Twitter user commented that “the public’s reactions show as if they will stop using WhatsApp and asked the hackers to take his data as well, for only four people text me anyway”. Another user wrote, "What? Another Data breach. I can't keep up this week." Someone else said “I'm really not surprised at #WhatsApp data leak news. Afterall it's a Meta/Facebook bought thing!”

A disappointed user twitted, "End to End encryption makes your data safe not even WhatsApp can see it...is the biggest joke ever #WhatsApp." Another commented, "Whatsapp breach again, this social media giant still having issues. But i feel there must be a good scene at whatsapp headquarters, Whatsapp your hiring? Mailed you CV already #WhatsApp."
