But this rare mango variety is also now found in India in the Birbhum district of West Bengal. It is auctioned at an excessive rate of Rs 3 lakh per kilogram. One single Miyazaki mango from West Bengal costs Rs10000.
They are so expensive because of the extreme care, labour and time needed to grow them. Only about 10% of the mangoes grown each year are auctioned and only a small part of those are sold for high dollar. People all over the World are attracted by a Miyazaki mango tree which has been planted near a mosque in Dubrajpur in Birbhum, West Bengal .
Though found in Japan, this mango type is usually grown during the peak harvest season - from April to August. The Miyazaki mango undergoes a marvellous change as it ripens. Initially, its colour is purple but when it reaches its peak of ripeness, it changes into a flaming red. It is the tastiest and juiciest of all mango varieties. The weight of a single Miyazaki mango 350 grams approximately.
The mosque authorities held an auction for the prized Miyazaki mangoes, called 'eggs of the sun'. The mosque collected lakhs of rupees by selling the rare mangoes .The authorities told, the collected money will be used for the development of the mosque.
A local villager planted the Miyazaki mango tree two years ago. It was only that the villagers came to know that those mangoes are the world's expensive mangoes ever. As the news spread in the locality, it soon becomes a point of attraction.
Hence, it can be called, ' mangoes for maharajas' , as they are out of reach of common people hands. Let consuming Miyazaki mango remains a dream for common people.
