Taking a historic order on Wednesday, May 11, the Supreme Court has put the sedition law on hold until the government reviews it. The move will impact those who have been charged under the colonial-era relic. People who have been jailed under sedition cases can approach the courts for bail.

The decision has been taken after the court announced to set a 24-hour deadline for the center to take a decision if the Indian Penal Code (IPC)'s Section 124A can be put on hold "to protect people" from arrests until the government reviews the law.

Chief Justice NV Raman said that sedition law should be on hold

In a statement, Chief Justice NV Ramana said, "It is clear that the Centre agrees that the rigors of (sedition) are not in tune with the current situation. It will be appropriate not to use this provision of law till further re-examination is over. We hope and expect that center and state will desist from registering an FIR under 124A (sedition law) or initiate a proceeding under the same till re-examination is over."

During the hearing of the sedition law case on Wednesday, the Chief Justice of India said, "We have discussed elaborately. We are passing this order. In view of the above, the Union of India agrees with the Prima facie opinion expressed by the Court that the rigors of Section 124A are not in accordance with the current social milieu", quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.

Sharing a sharp reaction, Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju said, "We respect each other, the court should respect the government, legislature and the government should also respect the court. We have a clear demarcation of boundary and that Lakshman Rekha should not be crossed by anybody."
