India created history at the Oscars 2023 ceremony held at the Dolby Theatre as ‘Naatu Naatu’ song went on to win the honor at the Best Original Song category, the award was given to composer MM Keeravaani , who sang a version of the carpenters hit Top Of The World as his acceptance speech, and lyricist Chandrabose. This viral track is from the movie RRR directed by SS Rajamouli and stars Ram Charan and Jr NTR as lead actors, all of whom attended the ceremony. Along with it India also won in the Best Documentary Short Subject category for the film ‘The Elephant Whisperer’, it is a film about Momman and Bellie, a couple belonging to an indigenious tribe in South India, who look after orphaned elephants Raghu and Ammu.

Despite the team sending ‘RRR’ film in 14 nominations and creating a huge buzz over the world it could only make it to one category – Best Original Song- in the final Oscar shortlist but it is still a huge achievement. The film has won several awards the most prominent being the Golden Globe Award for Best Song , five Hollywood Critics Association Awards and 2 Critics Choice Movie Awards and these wins have brought glory to Indian cinema.

This was the first time that India had received 3 nominations at the Oscars besides Deepika Padukone was one of the Indian celebrity presenter and all of this is enough to create a sense of excitement among the audience. These awards have highlighted Indian talents and storytelling ability, this is something that will motivate future filmmakers and people belonging to the fraternity. As the Academy Awards are trying to be more diverse finding representation on the Oscar stage might now be easier though the path is challenging and we can expect more Indian films to create history in the following years.
