PM Modi will inaugurate the Saryu Canal National Project in Uttar Pradesh on December 11.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Saryu Canal National project in Uttar Pradesh’s Balrampur district on December 11. "This will be the biggest project in Uttar Pradesh with a budget of Rs 9,802 crore which will benefit 25-30 lakh farmers in nine eastern districts of the state including Bahraich, Gonda, Shravasti, Balrampur, Basti, Siddharthnagar, Sant Kabir Nagar, Gorakhpur and Maharajganj", said Jal Shakti Minister Mahendra Singh.
On Thursday, Singh told reporters in Bahraich that the project was started back in 1978 which has been completed with the prompt handling by the prime minister. Along with facilitating the irrigation of 14.04 lakh hectares of land the project will aid in reduction of the risk of floods in several flood-prone areas of the area due to water coming from Nepal, he said.
Under this project, five rivers have been connected together including Ghagra, Saryu, Rapti, Banganga and Rohin, while canals with a length of 6,600 kilometers have been linked to the 318 km long main canal. In 1978, the state government started this project on a small scale for irrigation in two districts at a cost of Rs 78.68 crore. In 1982, the project was expanded to nine districts. By 2021, its name was changed to Saryu Canal National Project and the cost was increased to a whopping Rs 9,802 crore, said the officials.
