Pakistan’s ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan has survived a shooting at a political rally on Thursday that his party called an assassination attempt, a gunman opened fire at his rally in the Wazirabad district of Punjab province on Thursday, which killed one person and injured several others and prompted protests among Khan’s supporters. At least five people, including Imran Khan, were injured in the firing at the rally.
A bullet hit Khan in the leg, said Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) senior leader Asad Umar, who later added: “Yes, he has been shot, there are pellets lodged in his leg, his bone has been chipped, he has also been shot in his thigh.” Imran Khan has been admitted to Shaukat Khanum Hospital in Lahore where he's reported to be in stable condition.
Imran narrated the events of the attack and stated that he would have died if "two heroes" had not been present during the long march. He declared, "I salute martyr Muazzam and Ibtisam, the way he caught the attacker the attacker would have fired more bullets if it weren't for his bravery."
The lone attacker was arrested immediately but his identity has not been ascertained. No group has claimed the responsibility for the “assassination" attempt at Imran Khan who has been holding the anti-government rally across Pakistan. The accused, who was caught on camera brandishing the weapon he fired, has been arrested by the police.
A man suspected of firing shots at the rally was detained on Thursday, according to police. On Thursday, Pakistan’s Ministry of Information released a video of a confession from an unnamed man who it claims carried out the attack. In the video, the man says he “wanted to kill Imran Khan” because he “was misleading people,” adding he had no accomplices.
The information minister confirmed the footage was recorded by police. No one has yet been charged with the attack. According to reports, the attacker has been identified as M Naveed son of M Bashir, a resident of Sodhra District Wazirabad. He is a guard of MNA Alamgir Khan.
