A tragic fire outbreak at an electric bike showroom located in Secunderabad killed around eight people on Monday. According to the preliminary investigation conducted by police the e-bikes parked in the ground floor were kept on charging mode which might have resulted in a short circuit followed by the fire outbreak.
The outbreak occurred at 10 pm. Then the smoky blazes began engulfing the restaurant and lodge located above the showroom which was spotted by the hotel staff. The fire department rushed to rescue on their call. Some of the 25 people trapped in the building and 6 out of them died. Some people tried to jump out of the window while some others were rescued by the fire fighters and some were taken to the hospital.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner CV Anand informed "It appears there are 23 rooms in all the four floors in the hotel. The smoke traversed through the staircase from the bottom up to the top floor and completely engulfed all floors. Some people who were sleeping in the first and second floors came to the corridor through the thick smoke and died due to asphyxiation".
Police also said "Exact reasons for fire, whether it is due to short circuit or charging of batteries in the cellar or in the first floor where the scooter showroom is located, will be known after the Fire Department's investigation". However 35-40 electric vehicles were parked in the lower ground floor of the building with charging units which indicates a short circuit.
The owner is missing since the incident. Safety equipment’s were not in working condition and only one exit was present. Also the showroom had received NOC from the concerned authorities. The Transport Ministry has decided to order an inquiry after the discovery of the cause of the fire.
