Facebook, Instagram and Twitter always remain in a constant discussion regarding the data privacy. A deadline for three months was given to social media platform by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on 25 February. The deadline is going to expire on 25 May.

The Union Government on 25 February 2021 asked the Electronics and IT Ministry of India to appoint Compliance Officers, Nodal Officers etc. within 3 months to regulate digital content and all of them should have jurisdiction in India.

According to the order given by the government, companies have to appoint a compliance officer and their name and contact address should be from India, which includes things like complaint resolution, monitoring of objectionable material, compliance report and removal of objectionable material. A committee will also be formed under which people of Defense, Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Information Broadcasting, Law, IT and Women and Child Development will be formed. They will have the right to hear complaints on the violation of the code of conduct.

Indian microblogging site Kuo said on Saturday that it has followed the new guidelines for digital platforms ahead of the deadline set later this month. But no other social media platform has done so far. Sources say that any company which fails to follow these rules, their arbitration status can be terminated and criminal action can also be taken against them. Also, sources said that if companies fail to comply with these new rules by 26 May, they may lose the protection given to them under Section 79 of the Information Technology Act.
