Homocysteine is an amino acid which is produced by the body. Amino acids are chemicals which are present in our blood which enables our body to make proteins. Homocysteine breaks down with the help of Vitamin B12, vitamin B6 and vitamin B9 (folate) in order to generate other chemicals that are needed by our body. The levels of these amino acids are able to identify any vitamin deficiency in an individual's body. Homocysteine is also connected with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. High levels of this amino acid indicates a condition which is known as hyperhomocysteinemia.
High Levels of Homocysteine
Moderate, if from 16–30 μmol/l
Intermediate, if from 31–100 μmol/l
Severe, if over 100 μmol/l
Get the levels tested
Any individual is suggested to get a homocysteine level test when he or she demonstrates the signs of a vitamin B6, B12, or folate deficiency or if they are at increased risk of heart disease, stroke, or heart attacks.
A homocysteine test is suggested when there is a high risk of cardiovascular disease. In case of symptoms of a vitamin B deficiency also doctors suggest to get the homocysteine levels tested. Common symptoms of vitamin B deficiencies include:
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- Weakness in Muscles
- Complexion getting pale
- Feeling of tingling in the feet, arms or hands
- Soreness in tongue or mouth
