Weather Update: IMD Issues Yellow Alert For Heatwave in Delhi, Relief by Weekend

In the recent weather forecast, rainfall is predicted in Delhi. Thunderstorms along with gusty winds are expected by the weekend.

On Monday, June 13, Delhi recorded the minimum temperature at 31.6 degrees Celsius which is 4 degrees above the normal. The maximum temperature is likely to reach 43 degrees Celsius. The relative humidity for the day was recorded at 42 percent. 

As per the weather forecast by the weather agency, there is a possibility of light rain or drizzle on Monday in the national capital. The sky is likely to remain cloudy today bringing some relief from the tormenting heatwave conditions for the locals.

Relief from heatwave conditions by the weekend 

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert in the national capital for the heatwave. 

As per the weather department, the national capital is likely to get relief from sweltering heat by June 15-16. In the coming weekend, thundershowers, gusty winds, cloudy sky, and light rainfall is likely to occur in parts of Delhi and nearby areas. By Saturday, it is expected that Delhi's base station, the Safdarjung Observatory will record a dip in the maximum temperature at 38 degrees Celsius.

Temperatures soaring high in the national capital 

The temperatures in the national capital are soaring due to the hot and dry westerlies sweeping across northwest India. According to the data released by the IMD, the automatic weather station at the Sports Complex near the Akshardham temples was the hottest part of the city with the maximum temperature standing at 46.7 degrees Celsius. Higher temperatures were also recorded in other parts of the city such as Najafgarh recorded at 46.4 degrees Celsius, Mungeshpur recorded at 46.2 degrees Celsius, and Pitampura recorded at 45.8 degrees Celsius. 

As per the Vice President (Climate change and meteorology), Skymet Weather, the city is likely to welcome monsoon season from June 27 and a clear picture for this will emerge in a week or so.
