Following the conclusion of the ICC World Test Championship final against Australia, Team India opener Shubman Gill faced significant consequences. The entire Indian team was penalized with a 100% fine for maintaining a slow over-rate during the title decider. However, Gill received an additional 15% fine on his match fee due to his dissent towards the third umpire's decision, which resulted in his dismissal in the second innings. Consequently, Gill's total fine amounted to 115%.
Gill's disputed catch in the second innings against Australia became a major topic of discussion on social media, with many criticizing the third umpire for favoring the bowling team. Expressing his dissatisfaction, the young opener also indirectly criticized the third umpire through his social media platforms. Consequently, the International Cricket Council imposed an additional fine on Gill.
As per an ICC statement, Gill was found guilty of breaching article 2.7, which pertains to public criticism or inappropriate comments regarding an incident in an international match.
The statement from the ICC revealed that television umpire Richard Kettleborough determined that a catch taken by Cameron Green to dismiss Gill was clean. Later in the day, Gill posted on social media, seemingly questioning the decision.The ICC also mentioned in their release that India fell five overs short of the target after accounting for time allowances. Australia, on the other hand, were four overs short. Consequently, Australia also received an 80% fine on their match fee for their slow over-rate.These sanctions were imposed in accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. According to this article, players are fined 20% of their match fee for every over their team exceeds the allotted time.
