In the modern times, our work culture has led us to work for longer hours on the computer screens with no breaks. Most of the things has gone online which has made the world shrink into screens. To this, the arrival of Covid-19 has added exceptionally well to make us sit in front of our computers and laptop screens hooked for hours.
The huge rise in screen usage has started showing its impact on our mental and physical health causing eye strain, neck pain, anxiety obesity and other health complications to us. As per the recent medical study, the increased usage in screen time also brings us closer to the risks of strokes.
The study, published in the Stroke Journal of the American Stroke Association, revealed that adults below the age of 60 years and with increased screen time were more prone to strokes than those who are physically active.
As suggested in the report, "a single hour of screen time could bring a person’s life expectancy by 22 minutes and push them closer to the risk of heart ailments and cancer. Another UK-based study pointed towards a correlation between stroke and screen usage. It highlighted the possibility of a stroke was higher in case of screen usage continued for 2 hours. In case, the continuous screen usage went beyond two hours, it could be categorized as addiction and that added another 20 per cent risk of strokes."
The study has found that the screen usage time, especially for youngsters has been on the rise since a long time. The young generation is known to be hooked and glued to the screen of their mobile phones, laptops, for very long durations constantly and which might push them to unwarranted health issues.
The digital screens of computers, laptops and smartphones emits blue light which reduces the production of Melatonin. Melatonin is the hormone released at night which is associated to control our the sleep-wake cycle. Longer screen timings disturbs the routine of the body and makes it difficult for people to get up and sleep on time.
Deal with it
- Reduce the screen time by taking frequent breaks during work and otherwise.
- Incorporate physical activities into your routine and this doesn’t necessarily mean hitting the gym.
- Starting off with morning, even walks and some yoga will surely help you towards better health.
