Rain Havoc in the Indian Peninsula

Monsoon withdrawal remains slow, no further progress expected over next five days.

India Weather News highlights: Monsoon withdrawal remains slow, no further progress expected over next five days. Further withdrawal of the Southwest monsoon from more regions along the north-western parts of the country is not expected at least for another five to seven days, officials of Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday. Last Tuesday, the IMD had declared the commencement of the monsoon withdrawal from southwest Rajasthan and small portions of Kutch. But some rains are likely over Kutch in the coming days, the weather models indicated.

After rainfall through the night and early Friday morning, overcast skies and moderate rainfall with thundershowers are set to persist in Delhi on Friday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘yellow’ alert for Friday, which is a warning to ‘be prepared’. The impact expected on Friday, according to the IMD, is major traffic disruptions, increased chances of accidents and water logging in low-lying areas.

Incessant heavy rains in parts of South India have left the region battered by flooding and water-logging in several places, including Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Hyderabad. The torrential rain submerged arterial roads, flooded posh apartment complexes and homes, snapped power lines, and jammed traffic. Some of the areas that are badly hit by water logging are Rainbow Drive Layout, Sunny Brooks Layout, Bellandur, Eco Board, and some areas on Sarjapur Road.

India Meteorological Department scientist RK Jenamani said the continuous rain is on account of an interaction between remnants of a low-pressure area and a western disturbance. The cyclonic circulation lies over northeast Rajasthan and is likely to persist till Sunday. “From September 26, rain over Delhi, Haryana and south-west Uttar Pradesh is likely to abate gradually”. He added that once the rain abates from the plains, they will have clarity on the withdrawal of monsoon.

It’s the time of the year when normally monsoon starts retreating from India’s North West including the National Capital Region. Following the trend monsoon 2022 started withdrawal from parts of West Rajasthan earlier in the week when the Indian Meteorological Department declared the withdrawal of southwest monsoon from Bikaner, Jodhpur and Naliya as the conditions turned favourable. At the same time, heavy rains have wreaked havoc in most parts of Delhi NCR, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh leading to major urban water logging and traffic congestion for longer hours.
