On Wednesday, Fuel prices have remained unchanged for four consecutive days in the country. Whereas, international crude oil rates falls down. Some experts believe that petrol and diesel prices will be cut soon as OMCs are holding rates due to the current dip in global oil prices.
In Delhi, petrol is retailing at Rs 101.84 per litre and nearly Rs 108 per litre in Mumbai. Rates in Kolkata and Chennai have already crossed Rs 102 per litre. Petrol is retailing above Rs 100 per litre in at least 30 cities. In Delhi, diesel price is nearing Rs 90 per litre. In most other cities, diesel is already retailing at Rs 90 per litre. In some states, prices have come down that have reduced value-added tax (VAT) marginally.
As reported by India Today, "while some states have reduced VAT marginally, the central government has clearly said that it is not in a position to reduce high excise duty levied on petrol and diesel. The government said it cannot reduce excise duty due to high expenditure this year on Covid-19 vaccinations and other relief measures."
As per sources, it may be noted that taxes collected on petrol and diesel are the highest in India.
