Every year, the Minorities Rights Day is celebrated on December 18 to uphold the right to freedom and equal opportunities for the ethnic minorities in India. The day is observed to raise awareness about the respect and dignity of the minorities. The day highlights the importance of eliminating all forms of discrimination against minorities.

History of the day 

In 1992, December 18 was declared by the United Nations as the Minorities Rights Day. The UN had adopted the statement on the individual’s Rights belonging to religious or Linguistic National or Ethnic Minorities. In India, the responsibility of carrying out the events on this day is given to the National Commission for Minorities (NCM). The NCM was established by the Union Government under the National Commission for Minorities Act, in 1992. 

Significance of the day 

Under the international law, India acknowledges the recognition and protection of minority rights. December 18 commemorates declarations on the rights of persons belonging to National or Ethnic, Religious, and Linguistic Minorities. The central government ensures efforts to guarantee their rights to non-discrimination and equality.
