Karwa Chauth is significantly based on the love between two life partners. In ancient times men used to leave their wives and children for long periods in order to participate in wars. So wives observed fasting all day long and so their husband would be blessed with a long life.
This festival begins with consumption of Sargi by married women. Sargi is a special meal prepared that usually includes Seviyan or vermicelli, paranthas, fruits and sweets. Women prepare delicious food and are supposed to eat it before sunrise after offering it to Chauth Mata. The tradition of Sargi is mostly followed in the Pujabi community. Sargi is very nutritious and provides energy to the wives during their fast
Women also apply mehendi in their hands as it symbolises good fortune of a wife. Following this Indian women observe strict Nirjala fast beginning from sunrise till moonrise. Women don’t eat or drink anything throughout the day while praying for the long life of their spouse. Karwa refers to the earthen pot used to keep water that is offered to the Moon. This water is known as Argha.
Women break their fast in the hands of their husband after offering Argha to the Moon. They also wear nice clothes and decorate themselves with beautiful ornaments like a bride. This festival is beautifully portrayed in blockbuster Bollywood movies and TV serials. Recently few males have also initiated observing fast for long life of their wives which had turned the festival more special.
