International Day of Epidemic Preparedness: Know the History and Significance of the Day

In order to prepare for future outbreaks and sensitize people about epidemics on all levels, the United Nations and World Health Organization marked December 27 as the International day for Epidemic Preparedness.

History of the Day 

The United Nations General Assembly had emphasized on the need to advocate the importance of the preparedness for, prevention of and partnership against epidemics. The first ever International day of Epidemic Preparedness was observed on December 27, 2021. 

As per the United Nations, "It also underscores the significance of solidarity and partnership among every international organization, and even every community and individual to combat a pestilence like Covid-19." 

Significance of the Day

As stated by WHO, "WHO works closely with governments to support efforts to build strong emergency and epidemic preparedness systems, as part of an overall approach to advance universal health coverage and strengthen primary health care systems." 

"COVID-19 is a human tragedy. But it has also created a generational opportunity. An opportunity to build back a more equal and sustainable world. The response to the pandemic, and to the widespread discontent that preceded it, must be based on a New Social Contract and a New Global Deal that create equal opportunities for all and respect the rights and freedoms of all", said António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations.
