The Kalavari class submarine i.e. submarine INS Vela has joined the Indian Navy today. The fourth Kalavari-class submarine INS Vela is 221 feet long, 40 feet high and weighs 1565 tonnes. About 11 km of pipe and 60 km of cable fitting work has been done for installation of machinery at INS Vela.
This submarine is made of special steel, has high tensile strength which is capable of operating deep under water. Its stealth technology enables it to dodge the radar system i.e. the radar will not be able to track it. It can complete its work without seeing the enemy. Apart from this, it can be operated in any weather.
INS Vela has 360 battery cells
INS Vela is equipped with two 1250 kW diesel engines. It has 360 battery cells. The weight of each is close to 750 kg. On the basis of these batteries, INS Vela can cover a distance of 6500 nautical miles i.e. about 12000 km. This journey can be of 45-50 days. This submarine can detect the enemy even at a depth of 350 meters.
The submarine was commissioned in the presence of Navy chief Admiral Karambir Singh at the Noval Dockyard in Mumbai. The Navy chief said that INS Vela has the ability to undertake an entire spectrum of submarine operations.
"INS Vela has the ability to undertake an entire spectrum of submarine operations. Given today's dynamic and complex security situation, its capability and firepower will play a crucial role in enhancing the Navy's ability to protect India's maritime interests," he added.
