India's Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand Wins Norway Chess Tournament

Vishwanathan Anand wins the Classical Section of the Norway Chess Tournament. Read further to know more about the victory.

Viswanathan Anand, India's Chess champion successfully recorded another historic win in the Classical section of the Norway Chess tournament after defeating China's champion Wang Hao in the third round. 

On Friday, the 52-year-old chess champion, Anand registered victory in the Armageddon (sudden death game) after the regular match of the classical section was drawn after 39 moves.

As per a report by Sportstar, "the Armageddon saw the former world champion pip Hao in 44 moves to take his points tally to 7.5. He is followed by American Wesley So, who is on 6 points, and world no. 1 Magnus Carlsen (5.5)." 

Sharing the information via their official Twitter handle, Chess24 wrote, "Vishy Anand beats Wang Hao in Armageddon to win a 3rd mini-match in a row and maintain a 1.5-point lead over 2nd place Wesley So!" 


After beating Frenchman Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Veselin Topalov (Bulgaria) in the initial two rounds, India recorded a third straight win in the Classical section of the Norway Chess tournament.

Other matches of the day 

However, in the other matches, Vachier-Lagrave defeated Norwegian Aryan Tari, and drawing the classical and Armageddon games, Anish Giri shared points with Wesley So. On the other hand, in the sudden death game, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov topped Topalov. 

Preceding the Classical event, the Blitz event was won by American Wesley So.
